Donald Trump’s latest fundraising strategy involves a joint agreement with the Republican National Committee (RNC) that prioritizes funding his campaign and a PAC—Save America—that supports his legal defenses, before distributing any remaining funds to the RNC. This approach, detailed in a fundraising invitation, indicates that donations to the Trump 47 Committee will first cover the legal maximum to Trump’s campaign, then to Save America, and finally, any residuals will go to the RNC and state parties. This method has raised concerns among some Republicans and is seen as a departure from conventional fundraising practices, where candidates typically focus on gathering funds for direct campaign activities.

Save America, a leadership PAC, cannot directly fund Trump’s campaign activities but has notably spent a significant portion of its budget on legal expenses, with legal spending constituting 85% of its total operating expenses early this year. The Trump campaign has defended this allocation, stating that Save America also funds a variety of other expenses unrelated to legal battles. Despite the substantial suggested donations for the upcoming Palm Beach fundraiser, the campaign emphasizes that only a small fraction of an individual’s maximum contribution goes to Save America, with the vast majority intended for the Trump campaign, the RNC, and state GOP parties.
