As Donald Trump prepares to accept the Republican nomination for the third time, he promises new efforts to win over more nonwhite voters who largely rejected him in 2020. However, an AP analysis of two June polls by the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research reveals that around 7 in 10 Black Americans and about half of Hispanic Americans still hold unfavorable views of Trump. Despite slight improvements since he left office, their opinions remain more negative than positive.

Any gains in support among Black or Hispanic Americans would benefit Trump, who won 35% of Hispanic voters and 8% of Black voters in 2020. Frustration with President Joe Biden, whose favorability among these groups has also declined, may not necessarily translate into increased support for Trump.

Overall, 6 in 10 U.S. adults view Trump unfavorably. Among Hispanic adults, about half have an unfavorable view, while 4 in 10 view him positively. Black adults remain broadly negative, with 7 in 10 holding unfavorable views. While younger Black adults are slightly more open to Trump, most still view him unfavorably.

The AP-NORC poll included 1,115 adults surveyed from June 7-10 and 1,088 adults from June 20-24, 2024.
