President Donald Trump warned Sunday that Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani could face federal funding cuts if elected, saying Mamdani must “do the right thing” or “they’re not getting any money.” Speaking to Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo, Trump reiterated a long-standing threat to punish Democratic-led cities over policies he opposes.

“He’s got to do the right thing,” Trump said of Mamdani. “Or the federal government is coming down very tough on them financially.”

Trump has previously targeted cities and states like California over policy disputes, including transgender sports laws. In the case of New York City, he said any future mayor must “behave themselves” to receive federal support.

Trump also repeated his claim that Mamdani, a Democratic socialist, is a “communist.” Mamdani rejected the label, telling NBC News’s Kristen Welker that Trump continues to attack his appearance, background, and beliefs.

Mamdani recently defeated Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary and is poised to face Eric Adams and Curtis Sliwa in the general election.
