President Trump said Tuesday he has “no intention” of firing Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, following days of speculation stirred by his social media posts criticizing Powell’s approach to interest rates.
At a White House event, Trump clarified his stance after previously calling Powell “Too Late” and suggesting he might remove him before his term ends in 2026. The remarks were prompted by Powell’s earlier statement that Trump’s tariff policies may delay any significant rate changes.
“We think that it’s a perfect time to lower the rate,” Trump said, urging Powell to act sooner to reduce borrowing costs for American families. “No, I have no intention of firing him. None whatsoever. Never did.”
Trump added that while rate cuts didn’t happen earlier, “it’s not the end” if they don’t happen now, but reiterated it would be “good timing.”
The comments came during a swearing-in ceremony for new Securities and Exchange Commission chairman Paul Atkins.
