WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump on Tuesday intensified his push for Senate Republicans to eliminate the filibuster, warning that failing to do so could lead to Democrats regaining control of Congress and the White House. Posting on Truth Social, Trump argued that keeping the rule—which requires 60 votes to pass most legislation—would prevent Republicans from advancing their agenda.

“The Democrats are far more likely to win the Midterms, and the next Presidential Election, if we don’t do the Termination of the Filibuster,” Trump wrote. He said scrapping it would allow Republicans to “get EVERYTHING approved, like no Congress in history.”

Trump claimed ending the filibuster would pave the way for GOP-backed election reforms, protections for gun rights, and bans on transgender women competing in women’s sports. He warned that Democrats would eliminate the rule if they return to power, allowing them to expand the Supreme Court and grant statehood to Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.

However, key Senate Republicans remain opposed. Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) reaffirmed his resistance, and Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) told CNN, “To do away with the filibuster as a whole, I don’t think that’s the right move right now.”
