WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump on Saturday proposed sending Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidy funds directly to Americans instead of insurance companies, a move that could further complicate efforts to end the ongoing federal shutdown, now in its 39th day.
In a Truth Social post, Trump called on Senate Republicans to “send hundreds of billions of dollars directly to the people so they can purchase their own healthcare,” accusing insurance companies of profiting from a “broken” system. The proposal came as the Senate reconvened after rejecting a bill to restore pay for hundreds of thousands of federal workers.
Trump offered no details on how such a plan would work, but his statement drew backing from several Republicans, including Sens. Bill Cassidy, James Lankford, and Lindsey Graham. Cassidy has proposed converting ACA tax credits into pre-funded federal accounts, while the conservative Paragon Health Institute has floated similar ideas involving health savings accounts.
Democrats quickly dismissed Trump’s remarks. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) called the proposal “nonsensical,” warning it could eliminate coverage protections. The dispute underscores deep partisan divides over healthcare and spending priorities as millions await the renewal of ACA subsidies set to expire at year’s end.
