President Trump on Monday encouraged Canadians to vote for a candidate who would support making Canada the 51st U.S. state, suggesting it would boost the nation’s economy and eliminate tariffs.

In a Truth Social post, Trump said Canadians could see “taxes cut in half” and industries “quadruple in size” with “no tariffs or borders” if they joined the United States. Trump also said America could no longer subsidize Canada without changes.

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, once supportive of Trump’s nationalist policies, quickly rebuked him, saying Canada will “never be the 51st state.” Liberal Prime Minister Mark Carney indirectly responded, urging Canadians to stay united and resist outside influences.

Canadian voters head to the polls Monday amid high tensions over Trump’s tariffs and his growing influence on the election. Despite accusations that he was “trolling” Canada, Trump insisted in an interview with Time that he was serious about the proposal.

Election results are expected by midnight if counting proceeds smoothly.
