Donald Trump announced Monday that California will face “large scale fines” after a transgender high school athlete, AB Hernandez, won two girls’ state track titles. Trump criticized Gov. Gavin Newsom, calling him “Governor Gavin Newscum” and accusing him of defying prior warnings.
Hernandez, a junior at Jurupa Valley High, won the triple and high jump and took second in the long jump at the California state championships. The state’s athletic association had modified event rules to allow more female athletes to compete following national controversy over Hernandez’s eligibility.
Trump signed an executive order in February banning transgender athletes from girls’ and women’s sports and threatening to withhold federal funding from noncompliant schools. The Justice Department has since argued California’s policy violates the Equal Protection Clause and Title IX.
Maine and other states have defied the order, prompting further legal conflict. Maine Gov. Janet Mills says the directive violates state antidiscrimination law.
