Donald Trump has pledged to wealthy donors that he will suppress pro-Palestinian protests on university campuses if re-elected. Labeling the demonstrations as a “radical revolution,” Trump promised to reverse the movement’s progress by decades. He also vowed to expel foreign students participating in the protests, which have spread as tented encampments across U.S. colleges.
At a New York event on May 14, Trump commended the NYPD for dismantling Columbia University’s encampments and suggested similar actions nationwide. Republicans are framing these protests as unchecked “chaos” under President Biden’s tenure, with Congressional hearings focusing on antisemitism allegations among protesters and perceived inaction by university leaders.
Trump also reversed his stance on Israel’s offensive in Gaza, now supporting Israel’s “war on terror” after previously criticizing the country for “losing the PR war.” He reiterated his support for Israel’s right to self-defense, despite the significant Palestinian casualties resulting from the conflict. Trump’s remarks come amidst a backdrop of contentious U.S.-Israel relations, with Trump expressing resentment towards Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for acknowledging Biden’s 2020 election victory.
In his address to donors, Trump highlighted his administration’s pro-Israel policies, including moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem and recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights.
