President-elect Donald Trump announced he wants real estate developer Charles Kushner, father of son-in-law Jared Kushner, to serve as ambassador to France. Trump praised him on Truth Social as “a tremendous business leader, philanthropist, & dealmaker.”
Charles Kushner, founder of Kushner Companies, was pardoned by Trump in December 2020 after pleading guilty years earlier to tax evasion and illegal campaign contributions. Prosecutors alleged he also orchestrated a revenge scheme by hiring a prostitute to compromise his brother-in-law, who was cooperating with federal investigators. Kushner pled guilty to 18 counts, including witness tampering, and served two years in prison.
Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who prosecuted the case, called the crimes “loathsome” and blamed Jared Kushner for his 2016 removal from Trump’s transition team. Trump and the elder Kushner became connected through real estate, with their children marrying in 2009.
