Supporters of former President Donald Trump’s Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement criticized Axios for revising its characterization of Vice President Kamala Harris as the “border czar.” Since President Joe Biden exited the 2024 presidential race and endorsed Harris, her role in handling immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border has been a focal point of attacks from the right. In 2021, Biden tasked Harris with addressing the “root causes” of migration in Central American countries, but she was never in charge of border security.

In a post on X, Axios promoted an article titled, “Harris border confusion haunts her new campaign,” and stated, “The Trump campaign and Republicans have tagged Harris repeatedly with the ‘border czar’ title — which she never actually had.” However, Trump’s supporters quickly pointed out that an April 2021 Axios article had referred to Harris as the “border czar.” Axios added an editor’s note clarifying their previous incorrect labeling of Harris.

Trump campaign senior advisor Danielle Alvarez and conservative commentators accused Axios of attempting to rewrite history. Alvarez blamed Harris for increased migrant crime and drug trafficking, while Harris campaign spokesperson Kevin Munoz criticized Trump’s border policies and defended Harris’ commitment to securing the border.
