President-elect Donald Trump reignited discussions of annexing Canada following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation after nine years in office. On Truth Social, Trump claimed many Canadians would welcome becoming the “51st State,” arguing it would eliminate trade deficits and enhance security.
Trump linked Trudeau’s resignation to trade disputes, including a proposed 25% tariff on Canadian imports, which he said highlighted Canada’s reliance on U.S. subsidies. Trump’s past taunts, such as referring to Trudeau as the “governor” of Canada, were cited as factors in Trudeau’s political challenges.
Pierre Poilievre, leader of Canada’s Conservative Party and potential next prime minister, firmly rejected Trump’s proposal, stating Canada “will never be the 51st state.” Experts noted that annexing Canada could pose challenges for U.S. Republicans due to Canada’s more liberal political leanings.
Trump has also previously floated annexation ideas for Greenland and the Panama Canal.
