President Donald Trump suggested Wednesday that the federal government should take control of Washington, D.C., citing concerns over crime, homelessness, and urban decay. “I think that we should govern the District of Columbia,” Trump told reporters. “Run it strong, run it with law and order, make it absolutely flawless.”
A federal takeover would require overturning the Home Rule Act of 1973, which granted the city an elected mayor and council. While Congress retains oversight, it rarely intervenes. Republican lawmakers Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) and Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) have introduced the BOWSER Act, which would repeal home rule to “restore the honor and integrity” of the city.
Trump criticized the state of the district, pointing to graffiti, encampments, and crime, while praising the city’s police force as “not utilized properly.” Mayor Muriel Bowser defended D.C. as a “world-class city” with a strong economy and declining crime rates. Trump’s remarks come ahead of visits from foreign leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron.
