President Donald Trump has proposed that Canada join the United States as its 51st state to avoid paying $61 billion to participate in the U.S. “Golden Dome” missile defense system.
“I told Canada, which very much wants to be part of our fabulous Golden Dome System, that it will cost $61 Billion Dollars if they remain a separate, but unequal, Nation, but will cost ZERO DOLLARS if they become our cherished 51st State. They are considering the offer!” Trump posted on Truth Social Tuesday.
The timing coincided with King Charles III’s ceremonial opening of Canada’s Parliament, where he emphasized the nation’s independence and membership in the British Commonwealth. “The True North is indeed strong and free,” Charles said.
Canada has shown no indication it is considering Trump’s proposal. In past tensions, the country responded to Trump’s tariffs on steel and aluminum with retaliatory measures, signaling ongoing resistance to closer political integration with the U.S.
Trump’s Golden Dome plan, announced last week, would create a missile shield over North America. Space Force Gen. Michael Guetlein will lead the effort.
The Washington Examiner reports that the Canadian Embassy has not yet responded to Trump’s comments.
