Donald Trump said Monday he would support arresting California Gov. Gavin Newsom amid escalating protests in Los Angeles over immigration enforcement. Asked if border czar Tom Homan should arrest Newsom, Trump replied, “I would do it if I were Tom,” adding that Newsom “likes the publicity” but is “grossly incompetent.”

Newsom responded on X, calling the statement “an unmistakable step toward authoritarianism.” He added, “The President of the United States just called for the arrest of a sitting Governor. This is a line we cannot cross.”

The conflict comes as the Trump administration deployed the National Guard to Los Angeles without Newsom’s approval. Newsom has announced legal action, arguing local officials were managing the situation. Protesters have clashed with law enforcement and damaged property. Trump blamed “professional agitators,” calling them “insurrectionists.”

Newsom previously dared Homan to arrest him, saying on MSNBC, “Come after me… I care about this community.” Trump declined to say if he would invoke the Insurrection Act.
