Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump has filed a $10 billion lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service and the U.S. Treasury Department, accusing the agencies of failing to prevent the unlawful disclosure of his confidential tax records to news organizations between 2018 and 2020.
The lawsuit, filed Thursday in federal court in Florida, also lists Eric Trump, Donald Trump Jr., and the Trump Organization as plaintiffs. It alleges that the disclosure of protected tax information caused severe reputational and financial harm, damaged business interests, and negatively affected President Trump’s public standing, including during the 2020 presidential election.
The suit stems from actions by former IRS contractor Charles Edward “Chaz” Littlejohn, who was sentenced in 2024 to five years in federal prison after pleading guilty to leaking tax data. Littlejohn, who worked for Booz Allen Hamilton, admitted to providing Trump’s tax information to The New York Times and ProPublica in what prosecutors described as one of the most significant breaches of taxpayer confidentiality in IRS history. The disclosures violated IRS Code 6103, which strictly protects tax return information.
The New York Times reported in 2020 that Trump paid little or no federal income tax in several prior years, while ProPublica later published a broader series examining his financial records. Trump’s lawsuit argues those disclosures were illegal and politically damaging, regardless of subsequent congressional releases of his tax returns.
The lawsuit follows a recent Treasury Department decision to terminate contracts with Booz Allen Hamilton, citing failures to safeguard sensitive taxpayer data.
