President Donald Trump signed an executive order Friday to prohibit COVID-19 vaccine mandates in schools nationwide, fulfilling a campaign promise to support parental rights in education.

The order prevents federal funds from supporting educational institutions that require COVID-19 vaccinations for in-person learning. It also directs the secretaries of education and health and human services to develop a plan to eliminate coercive vaccine mandates and report noncompliant entities.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a prominent anti-vaccine advocate, was confirmed as Trump’s new HHS secretary on Thursday. That same day, the Senate questioned Trump’s nominee for education secretary, Linda McMahon, who the president has suggested could oversee the downsizing or elimination of the Education Department.

Trump has repeatedly opposed COVID-19 vaccine mandates, criticizing former President Joe Biden’s policies. Last week, he signed an executive order reinstating military personnel discharged for refusing the vaccine.
