President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Saturday, officially designating English as the United States’ national language for the first time in U.S. history.

In the order, Trump argued it is “long past time” for the U.S. to formally adopt English as its official language, noting that the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were written in English.

“A nationally designated language is at the core of a unified and cohesive society,” Trump stated. He emphasized that the move would “promote unity, cultivate a shared American culture, ensure consistency in government operations, and create a pathway to civic engagement.”

The executive order does not specify how it will impact multilingual government services, such as voting materials and public assistance programs. Critics warn it could limit access to essential services for non-English speakers, while supporters argue it reinforces national identity.

This marks the first time in 250 years that the U.S. has declared an official language at the federal level.
