President Trump issued an executive order Tuesday barring federal funding for youth gender-affirming care, extending his administration’s efforts to restrict transgender rights. The order applies to individuals under 19 and directs federal agencies to cut funding to institutions that provide or research gender-affirming treatments.
The Department of Health and Human Services has 90 days to review best practices for treating gender dysphoria. The order also affects Medicare, Medicaid, and the Affordable Care Act’s essential health benefits.
Medical organizations, including the AMA and AAP, support gender-affirming care as essential, while research indicates fewer than 0.1% of adolescents received such treatments from 2018 to 2022.
The Supreme Court appears likely to uphold state bans on youth gender-affirming care, with such laws now in effect in 26 states since 2021.
