WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump on Wednesday appeared to confirm that FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino is preparing to step down, telling reporters that Bongino “did a great job” and suggesting he wants to return to media work.
Trump made the remarks while speaking with reporters on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews, fueling reports that Bongino, the second-highest ranking official at the FBI under Director Kash Patel, plans to leave early in the new year. According to multiple people briefed on the matter, Bongino has already informed confidants of his intention to depart and is not expected to return to FBI headquarters this month.
The reports indicate Bongino considered announcing his resignation as soon as Dec. 19, though he has not formally confirmed the move. In a brief response to inquiries, Bongino dismissed the reporting without addressing the substance of the claims. The FBI declined to comment.
Bongino, a former Secret Service agent and NYPD officer, entered the role after building a large conservative media following. He previously hosted The Dan Bongino Show, founded the Bongino Report, and served as a frequent guest host for prominent right-wing radio programs. His appointment to FBI leadership drew criticism from former bureau officials and national security experts, who raised concerns about politicization and his history of promoting conspiracy theories.
In May, Bongino became emotional during a television appearance, describing personal sacrifices tied to the job, including prolonged separation from his family while working in Washington.
