President Trump announced Thursday that outgoing national security adviser Mike Waltz will be nominated as the next U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. The move follows controversy over a Signal chat mishap involving plans for a military strike in Yemen. Waltz’s departure is the first major personnel shift of Trump’s second term.
Trump praised Waltz’s military and government service, stating he has “worked hard to put our Nation’s Interests first” and will bring the same mindset to the UN. Waltz’s appointment will require Senate confirmation.
In the interim, Secretary of State Marco Rubio will assume dual roles, continuing to lead the State Department while serving as acting national security adviser. Trump made the announcement via Truth Social, reaffirming his commitment to national and global security.
The shuffle comes as Trump nears the 100-day mark of his second term and aims to refocus his foreign policy team amid increasing global tensions.
