The White House confirmed Saturday that President Donald Trump has deployed 2,000 National Guardsmen to Los Angeles in response to violent protests targeting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations. The move follows two days of clashes between protesters and federal officers after ICE raids led to over 100 arrests in the city.
“In recent days, violent mobs have attacked ICE Officers and Federal Law Enforcement Agents,” said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. “California’s feckless Democrat leaders have completely abdicated their responsibility to protect their citizens.”
ICE confirmed 118 individuals were arrested this week, including five known gang members. Protesters reportedly vandalized federal property and blocked deportation vehicles. In response, officers deployed tear gas and non-lethal munitions.
Border czar Tom Homan defended the National Guard deployment on Fox News, stating: “We’re going to push back… There’s zero tolerance on crossing that line.”
The protests began Friday following ICE raids in South L.A., Westlake, and the Fashion District. Video footage showed demonstrators clashing with federal agents and surrounding Customs and Border Protection vehicles.
