The Trump administration filed an emergency request Friday urging the Supreme Court to let the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) access sensitive Social Security Administration (SSA) records while it appeals a lower court ruling blocking that access.

The request comes after a federal judge in Maryland prohibited DOGE from retrieving data including Social Security numbers, health records, and financial information. Solicitor General D. John Sauer warned the injunction impedes DOGE’s mission to eliminate waste and fraud, calling the judge’s order “sweeping” and legally unfounded.

Judge Ellen Hollander, an Obama appointee, allowed limited access to redacted SSA data if DOGE staff are properly trained. In her April 17 ruling, she acknowledged DOGE’s intentions were “laudable” but emphasized concerns about how the agency goes about its work.

The lawsuit challenging DOGE’s access was brought by government unions and backed by legal advocacy group Democracy Forward. The 4th Circuit declined to pause the injunction in a 9-6 vote, leading the administration to escalate the matter to the high court.

The unions’ response is due Monday.
