The D.C. Joint Task Force announced Saturday that soldiers and airmen with Task Force Beautification began cleanup efforts this week, supporting local law enforcement at Metro stations and the National Mall.
President Donald Trump said he plans to ask Congress for $2 billion to “beautify” Washington, D.C., focusing on a three-mile radius around the White House and U.S. Capitol. He highlighted rusting poles, broken lights, and deteriorating roads as priorities. “Now it’s going to be clean,” Trump said, promising contracts to begin work soon.
The plan comes months after Congress cut $1.1 billion from D.C.’s budget, forcing citywide reductions to essential services. Local leaders argue returning those funds would better enhance public safety and community programs. The Senate approved restoring the money earlier this year, but it stalled before becoming law.
Trump tied the initiative to broader federal intervention in D.C., saying it would also target crime. “If we stay, we want to make sure it doesn’t come back,” he said, pledging the effort would be complete within a year.
