Nuuk, Greenland — President Donald Trump on Wednesday sharply escalated his long-running campaign to bring Greenland under U.S. control, declaring that “anything less” than American ownership of the Arctic island is “unacceptable” and urging NATO to help make it happen.
In a post on his social media platform, Trump said the United States “needs Greenland for the purpose of National Security,” arguing that U.S. control is essential to prevent Russian or Chinese influence in the Arctic. He tied the island directly to missile defense, claiming Greenland is vital to the planned Golden Dome missile-defense system and would make NATO “far more formidable and effective” if placed under U.S. authority.
Greenland, a semiautonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and a NATO ally, has rejected the idea. Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said the island “does not want to be owned by the USA,” while residents in Nuuk repeated the message that Greenland is not for sale. Danish officials have echoed that position, saying sovereignty rests with Greenland and Denmark alone.
The comments came hours before Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were scheduled to meet in Washington with Denmark’s foreign minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Greenland’s foreign minister Vivian Motzfeldt. Trump dismissed Nielsen’s objections, saying he did not know the Greenlandic leader and warning that his stance would be “a big problem.”
While Trump argues Greenland’s strategic location and resources justify U.S. control, local residents and experts dispute claims of widespread Russian or Chinese activity, saying existing U.S. military access already addresses security concerns.
