Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump rejected growing calls for stronger artificial intelligence safeguards Monday, arguing that his administration already has sufficient authority to control the technology and that additional limits could weaken the United States against China.
“The only control or ‘guardrails’ that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. He also called concerns about AI development and data centers a “SICK conspiracy” that would benefit China.
Trump’s comments came as several prominent technology executives urged greater caution. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently proposed slowing the development of advanced AI systems to give researchers more time to build safety measures. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk publicly supported elements of that approach.
The president specifically criticized Anthropic, saying his administration had already stopped the company from doing “bad, or potentially bad” things. His administration has clashed with Anthropic over national-security and military-use questions while generally favoring rapid AI development.
Microsoft also released a draft AI code of conduct Monday emphasizing that future systems should remain under human control and be capable of being corrected or shut down.
The debate reflects a widening divide over how quickly advanced AI should progress. Industry leaders warning about cyberattacks, autonomous behavior and other risks are calling for more oversight, while Trump argues that heavier restrictions could cost the United States its technological lead.
