WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Trump said Tuesday that he will not support any health care legislation unless it delivers funds directly to Americans, bypassing insurance companies entirely. In a Truth Social statement, Trump said premiums are rising nationwide and argued that insurers have “made trillions” while “ripping off America long enough.” He urged Congress to pass a plan that gives consumers full control to negotiate and purchase their own coverage.

The comments come as Affordable Care Act premium subsidies are set to expire at the end of the year, which would cause substantial cost increases in 2026 if Congress does not act. Trump said he has held “personal talks with Democrats” about a potential solution and claimed those conversations were encouraging, telling reporters over the weekend that insurers have seen huge profit gains while failing to reinvest adequately in patient care.

Some Republicans have long pushed for an approach that expands consumer bargaining power by redirecting federal funds away from insurers. Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, who chairs the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, floated a proposal Monday that aligns with Trump’s idea — shifting existing funds to consumers instead of insurance companies. Cassidy called the concept appealing across the political spectrum and said he is awaiting agency assessments before moving forward.

Trump urged lawmakers to “get it done now,” saying direct payments are the only path to what he calls “great healthcare in America.”
