President Donald Trump announced plans to fire multiple board members of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and install himself as chairman.
“At my direction, we are going to make the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., GREAT AGAIN,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, vowing to remove members who “do not share our Vision for a Golden Age in Arts and Culture.”
The Kennedy Center confirmed it had received no official notice but acknowledged that some trustees had been informed of their termination. This marks the first time a president has taken such action.
The board consists of 36 presidential appointees serving six-year terms, divided between Republican and Democratic picks. Former President Joe Biden had appointed several members before leaving office, including former White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.
The Kennedy Center was established in 1958 as a memorial to John F. Kennedy and hosts over 2,200 performances annually.
