Donald Trump said Wednesday he is considering pardons for the men convicted of plotting to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, telling reporters, “I’m going to look at it.” Speaking after the swearing-in of Jeanine Pirro as U.S. attorney for D.C., Trump described the case as a possible “railroad job.”

Barry Croft Jr. and Adam Fox were convicted in 2022 for leading the conspiracy and sentenced to 20 and 16 years, respectively. Prosecutors said the men hoped to incite a civil war in response to Whitmer’s COVID policies. Trump commented, “They were drinking and said stupid things,” but noted public interest from “both sides” in revisiting the case.

Ed Martin, Trump’s pardon attorney, publicly advocated for clemency, calling the plotters “victims just like Jan. 6.” Whitmer, who had harshly criticized Trump in 2020, has taken a more cooperative tone in his new term. She met with Trump in April and embraced him at a Michigan event in May.

Though Whitmer was never harmed, the plot shocked the nation. Critics argue that pardoning the conspirators would normalize political violence.
