Donald Trump said Tuesday the FBI may need to intervene to help return Texas Democrats who left the state to block a vote on a Republican redistricting plan. The president’s remarks follow a letter from Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) to FBI Director Kash Patel urging federal involvement in locating the absent lawmakers.

“They may have to,” Trump said when asked if the FBI should act. “A lot of people are demanding they come back.” He called it “a very bad look” that the lawmakers left for states like Illinois and New York.

The Democrats’ departure denied the Texas House a quorum, halting legislative proceedings. Gov. Greg Abbott ordered their arrest Monday, accusing them of violating their oath of office.

Trump emphasized that Republicans are “entitled” to pick up five additional congressional seats in Texas, citing GOP efforts to redraw the map during the 30-day special session.

This marks the third time Texas Democrats have left the state to block Republican-backed legislation—in 2003 over redistricting and in 2021 over voting laws.
