Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump said Friday that CNN, MS NOW and Politico are banned from the White House “effective immediately,” explicitly citing what he described as false and unfavorable coverage. He also suggested additional news organizations could face similar restrictions.
“Media Outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. Speaking later in the Oval Office, he said the outlets “purposely write negative news” because they want to hurt Republicans and his administration. He did not identify specific reports he said were false.
Exactly how the ban will operate remains unclear. Reporters from the affected organizations were still working at the White House Friday afternoon, and Trump acknowledged he did not know when their credentials might be revoked.
CNN called the threatened ban an “illegal assault” on constitutionally protected press freedoms, while Politico said it would defend its First Amendment rights. The White House Correspondents’ Association and press-freedom organizations also objected.
The action raises significant constitutional questions because courts have previously limited the government’s ability to revoke White House press access based on unfavorable coverage. During Trump’s first term, a federal judge ordered the administration to restore CNN reporter Jim Acosta’s credential after the White House suspended it.
The announcement follows other disputes between the administration and major news organizations, including the White House’s earlier restrictions on Associated Press access. Trump said Friday that the latest move could eventually extend to additional outlets.
