President Donald Trump on Friday said Chicago will “probably” be the next city where he deploys troops as part of his national crackdown on crime, homelessness, and illegal immigration.

“I think Chicago will be our next,” Trump told reporters at the White House, adding that New York may also be targeted. The announcement follows his decision to station 2,000 troops in Washington, D.C., where the Pentagon has now ordered some soldiers to carry firearms.

Calling Chicago a “mess,” Trump claimed residents are asking him to intervene: “African American ladies, beautiful ladies, are saying, ‘Please, President Trump, come to Chicago, please.’” He wore a red hat reading, “Trump Was Right About Everything.”

Trump has already federalized the California National Guard to send troops to Los Angeles, a move now under legal challenge. Federal law generally bars military involvement in civilian law enforcement, except under narrow circumstances.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson called the prospect of deployment “uncoordinated, uncalled for, and unsound,” while Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker warned against “an authoritarian power grab.” New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said sending the Guard to her state would “undermine” state-level crime reduction efforts.
