WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump said Monday that the U.S. military campaign against Iran is escalating and warned that the most significant phase of the operation has yet to occur.
In a phone interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, Trump said U.S. forces are “ahead of schedule” in the conflict, which began two days earlier in coordination with Israel. “We haven’t even started hitting them hard,” Trump said. “The big wave hasn’t even happened. This big one is coming soon.”
Trump described the operation, dubbed “Operation Epic Fury,” as going “very well,” adding that the United States is “knocking the crap out of Iran.” He reiterated that the campaign could last about four weeks but suggested progress has moved faster than expected.
The president said negotiations with Tehran failed because Iran refused to end nuclear enrichment and criticized the Obama-era nuclear agreement as a “pathway to a bomb.” Trump also acknowledged uncertainty over Iran’s leadership following initial strikes that reportedly killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other senior officials.
U.S. Central Command confirmed a fourth American service member has died from injuries sustained in Iran’s retaliatory attacks. Trump and other officials have indicated additional casualties are likely as the campaign continues.
