President Donald Trump issued an executive order Thursday sanctioning the International Criminal Court (ICC) over its war crimes cases against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. The order accuses the ICC of “illegitimate and baseless actions” against Israel and the U.S., asserting that neither nation recognizes the court’s jurisdiction.
The ICC issued arrest warrants last spring, alleging Israeli officials used starvation as a weapon in Gaza during the war against Hamas. The court also issued a warrant for Hamas military commander Mohammed Deif for his role in the Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel, which killed 1,200 people and resulted in 250 hostages.
Trump’s order blocks assets and entry to the U.S. for ICC officials and their families. While Senate Republicans failed to pass an ICC sanctions bill, Trump’s order bypasses Congress. Senate Democrats criticized the move, citing risks to U.S. businesses and international cases against Russia and the Taliban.
