WASHINGTON, DC — President Donald Trump reacted Tuesday night after Democrats secured sweeping victories in Virginia, New Jersey, and New York City, the first major elections since his return to the White House. Writing on Truth Social, Trump posted: “‘TRUMP WASN’T ON THE BALLOT, AND SHUTDOWN, WERE THE TWO REASONS THAT REPUBLICANS LOST ELECTIONS TONIGHT,’ according to Pollsters.”
Democrats notched decisive wins, with former CIA officer Abigail Spanberger becoming Virginia’s first female governor and Navy veteran Mikie Sherrill capturing the New Jersey governorship. Both ran moderate campaigns emphasizing affordability, health care, and economic stability while criticizing Trump’s handling of the ongoing federal shutdown.
In New York City, 34-year-old Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist, defeated Trump-backed independent Andrew Cuomo, pledging “a mandate for a city we can afford.” Trump had labeled Mamdani a “communist” before the election and threatened to cut federal funds to New York if he won.
Democrats also saw success in California, where voters approved Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Proposition 50, allowing mid-decade redistricting that could flip up to five GOP House seats. They further prevailed in Pennsylvania, Colorado, and Maine ballot measures.
Political analysts say the results reflect voter dissatisfaction with Trump’s economic policies and foreshadow potential Democratic gains in the 2026 midterms.
