President Donald Trump told reporters Thursday he made “no progress” during a call with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding a potential ceasefire in Ukraine. The two leaders discussed the ongoing war, as well as tensions with Iran.
“I’m not happy about that,” Trump said of the Ukraine conflict. He confirmed the conversation was lengthy but yielded no breakthroughs.
The call came one day after the Pentagon paused a shipment of air defense missiles to Ukraine over concerns about U.S. stockpiles. Trump downplayed the move, saying, “We have to make sure we have enough for ourselves,” and accused President Biden of depleting U.S. weapons.
While Trump pledged during his campaign to end the war in 24 hours — a timeline he later walked back — progress has been elusive. Trump has at various points criticized both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The U.S. has provided tens of billions in aid since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, but skepticism among Trump allies continues to grow.
