Donald Trump announced Tuesday that his administration will restore the original names of seven U.S. military bases that were previously named after Confederate officers. The announcement, made at North Carolina’s Fort Bragg, reverses a Biden-era effort aimed at distancing the military from symbols of the Confederacy and honoring more diverse figures.

“We won a lot of battles out of those forts. It’s no time to change,” Trump said. “And I’m superstitious, you know? I like to keep it going.”

Among the bases set to be renamed back are Fort Bragg, Fort Hood, Fort Polk, and Fort Robert E. Lee. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth signed a memorandum in February to reverse the name change of Fort Bragg, which had been renamed Fort Liberty in 2023.

The renaming initiative began in 2020 amid heightened awareness of systemic racism following George Floyd’s death. The bipartisan Naming Commission had recommended new names for nine bases and other military installations.

Trump’s decision drew sharp contrast with the commission’s intent to modernize military symbols and has been celebrated by some MAGA supporters rejecting institutional diversity efforts.

Renaming military forts for Confederate generals makes Trump and Hegseth appear sympathetic to the traitorous confederate cause of overthrowing the American government. This is consistent with Trump\’s current policies, which many are in conflict to the American Constitution.
