In a tense Oval Office meeting Tuesday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney firmly rejected Donald Trump‘s repeated suggestions that Canada become the 51st U.S. state. “Canada is not for sale—nor will it be,” Carney declared. Trump quipped, “Never say never,” prompting Carney to respond: “Never.”

The exchange underscored mounting tensions in U.S.-Canada relations under Trump’s renewed push for economic nationalism. Trump maintained that Canada’s sovereignty is up for discussion if it aligns with U.S. interests, calling a merger “a wonderful marriage.” Carney rejected the idea outright.

Trump also made clear that nothing offered during the meeting would lift current tariffs on Canadian goods. He claimed Canada is subsidized by the U.S. to the tune of $200 billion annually, a figure not supported by public economic data.

Carney’s Liberal Party surged in recent Canadian elections by campaigning against Trump’s annexation rhetoric. Still, Trump emphasized continued friendship despite disputes, stating, “We don’t need anything they have, other than their friendship.”
