WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump announced Saturday that he is increasing the temporary global tariff he plans to impose from 10% to 15%, a day after signing an executive order intended to bypass Congress following a Supreme Court ruling limiting his emergency tariff authority.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the increase was made “Based on a thorough, detailed, and complete review” of what he described as an “anti-American decision” issued by the Court. The 6-3 ruling found he lacked authority under emergency powers to implement sweeping tariffs.
Under the executive order signed Friday night, the temporary tariffs can remain in effect for 150 days unless extended by Congress. The initial 10% rate was scheduled to take effect Feb. 24. It is unclear when a revised order reflecting the 15% rate will be signed.
Trump also signaled additional tariffs could be pursued through other federal trade statutes requiring Commerce Department investigations.
The president sharply criticized Justices Neil Gorsuch, Amy Coney Barrett and Chief Justice John Roberts, who joined the majority opinion. He praised Justices Brett Kavanaugh, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, who dissented.
