President Donald Trump said he spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday and agreed to begin immediate negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. The conversation, Trump’s first publicly disclosed call with Putin since taking office, comes ahead of the invasion’s third anniversary.
Trump stated he would update Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the discussion. The call followed the U.S.-Russia prisoner exchange that freed American detainee Marc Fogel, signaling a possible thaw in relations. White House officials viewed the deal as an indication of Russia’s willingness to negotiate.
Trump described the call as “lengthy and highly productive,” covering topics like Ukraine, the Middle East, energy, AI, and global currencies. He emphasized a shared goal of stopping the war’s casualties, adding that Putin echoed his “common sense” campaign motto.
As part of the prisoner exchange, the U.S. released Russian crypto-hacker Alexander Vinnik, who forfeited $100 million in digital assets. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman played a key role in brokering the deal. Trump tasked top advisers to lead the upcoming Russia-Ukraine negotiations.
