The White House has withdrawn the nomination of billionaire entrepreneur Jared Isaacman to lead NASA, citing the need for a candidate more aligned with Donald Trump‘s “America First” space agenda. Isaacman, who has flown on two privately funded commercial space missions, had no prior federal government experience.
White House spokesperson Liz Huston said the next NASA administrator must fully support Trump’s vision of planting “the American flag on the planet Mars.” While no official reason was given, Huston emphasized ideological alignment as essential.
Trump announced Isaacman’s nomination in December, and a Senate cloture vote on his confirmation was anticipated Monday. The news was first reported by Semafor.
Isaacman, founder of Shift4 Payments and commander of the first all-civilian orbital spaceflight, would have been the first private astronaut to head NASA. His withdrawal signals a strategic pivot as Trump seeks leadership to more aggressively pursue nationalistic space exploration goals.
A new nominee has not yet been announced.
