At a campaign rally in Arizona, former President Donald Trump announced plans to hire 10,000 new Border Patrol agents and give a 10% raise to current agents, along with $10,000 retention and signing bonuses. This comes months after Trump opposed a bipartisan border security bill that included measures to hire more agents and tighten asylum rules.
Trump’s opposition to the bill, which was endorsed by the Border Patrol union, blocked it from passing, allowing him to focus on border security for his 2024 presidential campaign. Vice President Kamala Harris, who supports the bipartisan bill, criticized Trump for “running on problems” rather than solving them.
Trump’s proposal follows increased anti-immigration rhetoric, including his recent call for the death penalty for migrants who kill U.S. citizens.
