WASHINGTON, DC — President Donald Trump is urging Congress to dramatically increase U.S. defense spending, proposing a roughly 50 percent jump from about $1 trillion to $1.5 trillion for the 2027 fiscal year, a plan he says will fund what he calls a “dream military” capable of keeping the nation secure in “troubled and dangerous times.”

Trump made the proposal in a Truth Social post on Wednesday, asserting that higher tariff revenues make the expansion feasible. He wrote that negotiations with senators, representatives, and administration officials led him to conclude the boost is necessary to “build the ‘Dream Military’ that we have long been entitled to and, more importantly, that will keep us SAFE and SECURE, regardless of foe.”

The call for a $1.5 trillion defense budget comes after Trump ordered a military operation to capture Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and amid heightened geopolitical rhetoric, including discussions about Greenland and other strategic interests. Trump’s plan is unprecedented in modern U.S. history and would require congressional approval before it could be enacted.

The proposal also coincides with Trump’s recent criticism of defense contractors, whom he accuses of prioritizing shareholder payouts and executive compensation over timely weapons production. An executive order issued this week targets defense firms’ buybacks and executive pay until more production capacity is built.

Reactions to the proposal are expected to vary. Supporters may view the move as necessary for strategic strength, while critics point to potential strains on federal spending, with the U.S. already facing significant budget deficits and a defense budget near record levels.
