Former President Donald Trump praised the variety of state-level abortion laws, describing it as “a beautiful thing to watch” and suggesting it could unify the country. In an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, Trump discussed how states have individually decided on abortion rights since the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
“Now the states are deciding. And by the way, in many cases, like Ohio, it became… more liberal or progressive than people would have thought,” Trump told Hannity. “But the people of Ohio decided. The people of Kansas decided. The people are now deciding.”
Trump emphasized that this state-level decision-making process removes the burden from the federal government, which he claimed was the intention behind the Roe v. Wade reversal. He noted that some states have adopted more liberal abortion policies, while others have implemented stricter laws. “The people are deciding. And in many ways, it’s a beautiful thing to watch,” Trump said.
Trump credited his appointment of three conservative justices to the Supreme Court for ending Roe v. Wade and criticized Democrats for not supporting limits on late-term abortions. He maintained that state-level decisions on abortion would bring the country together on the divisive issue.
While Trump has supported state-led abortion policies, this stance has led to criticism from some conservatives who want a federal standard. The Biden campaign has linked Trump to restrictive state laws and highlighted the adverse effects on women who faced life-threatening conditions due to these bans.
Biden campaign communications director Michael Tyler responded to Trump’s interview, emphasizing the contrast between Biden’s and Trump’s positions on abortion. Tyler criticized Trump as “consumed by rage” and highlighted his felony conviction as a reason why he should not return to the Oval Office.
