During a White House meeting with African leaders, Donald Trump praised Liberian President Joseph Boakai for his “beautiful” English, seemingly unaware that English is Liberia’s official language and Boakai’s native tongue. “Where did you learn to speak so beautifully?” President Trump asked. When Boakai replied, “In Liberia,” Trump responded, “That’s very interesting… I have people at this table can’t speak nearly as well.”
The remark came as Trump hosted Boakai and the leaders of Senegal, Gabon, Mauritania, and Guinea-Bissau for lunch. Boakai, referencing shared diplomatic and economic interests, said Liberia has “a long-time friendship with the United States” and supports Trump’s economic policy framework.
The meeting also addressed the administration’s decision to shut down USAID, a move the White House described as a shift away from “charity-based foreign aid.” A Lancet study warns the cuts could result in more than 14 million global deaths, especially in Africa.
