President Donald Trump said Friday that the U.S. has repositioned two nuclear submarines to “appropriate regions” near Russia in response to recent statements by Russian Security Council Deputy Chair Dmitry Medvedev.
Citing “highly provocative” rhetoric from Medvedev, Trump warned on Truth Social the move was precautionary “just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that.”
The escalation follows a series of exchanges between the leaders on social media. Medvedev referenced Russia’s Cold War-era “dead hand” nuclear protocol, prompting Trump to urge him to “watch his words” and call Russia and India “dead economies.”
Despite the positioning of U.S. assets, Trump wrote, “I hope this will not be one of those instances” where words lead to unintended consequences.
The confrontation comes as Trump imposes new pressure on Russia over its war in Ukraine, threatening sanctions unless a ceasefire is reached by early August. Medvedev countered that Trump’s ultimatums were “a step towards war,” warning the U.S. not to repeat Biden-era missteps.
Trump also lashed out at India, saying its high tariffs and lack of trade deals made cooperation undesirable.
