A portrait of President Donald Trump will be removed from the Colorado State Capitol following his public criticism that it was “purposefully distorted” and “truly the worst.” House Democrats confirmed Monday that the removal is happening at the request of Republican lawmakers.
The portrait, painted by artist Sarah Boardman, has hung in the Capitol since August 2019. Though Gov. Jared Polis (D) was not involved in its commissioning, Trump blamed him in a Truth Social post, accusing the artist of losing her talent and favoring her portrait of former President Obama.
Kevin Grantham (R), a Fremont County commissioner who led fundraising efforts for the portrait while serving as state Senate president, defended Boardman. He acknowledged Trump’s right to want the image removed but called the attack on the artist unfortunate. “She’s a good person and a good artist,” Grantham said.
He emphasized the Capitol gallery honors the presidency, not individual officeholders, and said removing Trump’s portrait was ultimately up to those who paid for it.
