President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he will visit Fort Knox in Kentucky to inspect the nation’s gold reserves, responding to concerns raised by Elon Musk and some Republican lawmakers. “I’m actually going on this one. All my life I’ve heard about Fort Knox. That’s where the gold is kept,” Trump told Republican governors in Washington.
Trump, echoing unfounded claims spread by Musk and Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) and Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT), questioned whether the gold reserves remain intact. “We’re getting a little bit shaky. We’re getting the yips on this stuff. I want to find out,” he said. “Did anybody steal the gold in Fort Knox?”
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent dismissed speculation, stating that annual audits confirm “all the gold is present and accounted for.” Fort Knox, which holds 147.3 million ounces of gold—roughly half of the Treasury Department’s reserves—has been a secure storage site for decades.
