The Trump administration is planning a military parade in Washington, D.C., on June 14 to celebrate President Trump’s 79th birthday and the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary. A senior official confirmed the event to NewsNation.
The parade, reported by Washington City Paper, is expected to span nearly four miles from the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, to the White House. Trump previously sought a military parade in 2018 after attending France’s Bastille Day celebration, but that event was canceled due to a $92 million estimated cost and planning delays.
Critics of the original parade called it excessive. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) labeled it a “fantastic waste of money,” while Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) warned against a “Soviet-style” display.
Washington city officials have also voiced concerns over potential damage to roads from heavy military vehicles and high public safety costs.
Details of this year’s parade are still pending. Army command may oversee the event, which could involve flyovers and equipment from nearby bases. June 14 is less than 10 weeks away.
