President Donald Trump issued a full pardon to Paul Walczak, who was convicted of tax fraud, less than three weeks after Walczak’s mother attended a $1 million-per-person fundraiser at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, The New York Times reported Tuesday.
Walczak had been convicted of misusing money set aside for employee taxes to fund a lavish lifestyle, including luxury cars and personal expenses. His pardon application claimed the prosecution was politically motivated due to his mother, Theresa Fago’s, past political work on behalf of Trump.
Despite early inaction, Trump signed the pardon weeks after Fago attended the high-dollar fundraiser that included personal access to the former president. The full and unconditional pardon came as part of a broader wave of clemency grants.
Critics say the timing raises concerns over favoritism and the influence of campaign fundraising on presidential pardons. Trump has granted hundreds of pardons during his second term, including many to political allies and January 6 participants.
